OPCMIA Applauds Enactment of the Violence Against Women Act

On behalf of the OPCMIA’s nearly 50,000 members, I applaud President Biden for signing the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

The Act, which President Biden sponsored as a senator when it originally passed in 1994, provides survivors of domestic violence with the legal protections and support they need to safeguard themselves and their families. The reauthorization of VAWA further strengthens the law by expanding resources for LGBTQ+, indigenous and rural communities, and addressing the economic needs of survivors.

Some of our fellow OPCMIA members are survivors of domestic violence, as are our friends and neighbors, and we stand in unbreakable solidarity with them. Everyone should be safe in their own homes and our support for them is at the core of who we are as a union and what we stand for.

We owe President Biden and the members of Congress who voted for this bill our gratitude.
