General President Daniel Stepano

It was with great sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka this morning.

Over more than four decades of leadership, Rich Trumka leaves a legacy worthy of Samuel Gompers, Eugene Debs, John L. Lewis, William Green, Walter Reuther, George Meany and so many other titans of the U.S. labor movement.

His 12 years as AFL-CIO President, his previous service as AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer, and his 13 years as President of the United Mine Workers of America leave an unmatched record of achievement in improving the lives and strengthening the power of America’s workers.

Rich Trumka’s dynamic, fiery, inspirational leadership spearheaded our fights to raise wages and stop the shrinking of the middle class, build an economy where workers share in the prosperity they create, revitalize labor’s organizing efforts, and empower millions of workers with collective bargaining, and the respect and dignity on the job that comes with it.

It was an honor and a privilege to serve with a leader of honor and integrity, who was a never-ending source of energy, enthusiasm and, above all, solidarity.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and union sisters and brothers. And we pledge to do everything in our power to pick up the torch he carried for so many years and take the labor movement to new heights.

Daniel E. Stepano
General President
