General President Daniel Stepano

January 6, 2021 was a dark day in American history.  Let’s resolve on January 6, 2022 to hold all those responsible for the insurrection accountable and to take bold action to prevent it from ever happening again.

One year ago, we witnessed an unprecedented violent attack on democracy itself, spurred on by the first president in American history who refused to accept the results of a free and fair election and resisted a peaceful transition of power.  All those involved—both the rioters who assaulted the courageous Capitol police officers and threatened to hang Vice President Pence, and those who planned and incited the insurrection—must be brought to justice.

What’s most disturbing one year later is the attempt by so many powerful people with loud voices to rewrite history—to claim that the attack wasn’t so bad or to argue that it was justified by continuing to spout the Big Lie that the 2020 election was somehow stolen. So long as these charlatans keep denying reality and spreading disinformation, the threat to democracy posed by January 6th persists. The survival of America’s 246-year democratic experiment remains in mortal danger.

Today, we salute and support the courageous police who defended the Capitol.  We insist on a full reckoning for this attack on America.  And we pledge to tell the truth and defend democracy at every turn.

Daniel E. Stepano
General President
