President’s Messages

On this solemn and important day, the OPCMIA joins all Americans in honoring the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was an unparalleled moral force for racial, social and economic justice who spearheaded profound, positive, lasting change. It is up to all of us to carry his mission forward, especially in this moment when racism threatens the very fabric of our democracy.

January 6, 2021 was a dark day in American history.  Let’s resolve on January 6, 2022 to hold all those responsible for the insurrection accountable and to take bold action to prevent it from ever happening again.

Throughout the course of our 157-year history, countless proud OPCMIA members have served in the armed forces of the United States and Canada, defending our countries’ freedom. We are indebted to them for their patriotism, courage, and heroism.

As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on American soil, let us honor the heroes of that tragic day and let us take to heart the lessons of 9/11 so that we bring out the best of our union and our nations in the months and years to come.

I want to wish all OPCMIA members and their families a happy Labor Day! I hope that in addition to family gatherings, barbecues or other events, you’re able to take the time to reflect on what the labor movement means to you, to your brothers and sisters, and to our nation as a whole.

On behalf of the OPCMIA, I want to offer my heartiest congratulations to Liz Shuler on her election as President of the AFL-CIO. We also congratulate Fred Richmond of the United Steelworkers on his election as AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer and Tefere Gebre on continuing his service as AFL-CIO Executive Vice President.
